HISTORY AND FOLKLORE: Greek art depicts Athena with an owl as a constant companion, giving the creature strong associations with wisdom. In this part of the world, the owl's hooting is carefull observed as an omen, ofthen one foretelling death. This ominous feeling is mirrored in various settings, including Scotland, Wales, and Newfoundland, where the portentous meaning changes, but still speaks of ill fortune.
In Native American tradition, this predictive ability was a given unique twist: the bird acts as an early warning system so people can prepare. This is likely due to the owl's ability to bear the spirit of a deceased shaman. Among the Hopi, if one finds an owl feather, it represents the need to be truthful.
SAMPLE APPLICATIONS: Should you discover that you have an owl as a totem or spirit guide, you can anticipate your magick studies taking on whole new dimensions. These birds always bear a bit of mysticism in their wings, and they make us more fully aware of our spiritual nature and our capability to look beyond surface reality. If you find an owl feather, it's an excellent talisman for being true to yourself and inspiring wisdom in all your words and deeds. Keep owl images around you when you're in need of insights or messages from the Sacred.
Blessings!
