October is a magical month in Wicca. Not only is our most important holiday (Samhain) in this month, but this is also a month in which there are 2 full moons. The second moon (which year technically falls in early November) is called the Blue Moon and it is the 13th moon of the year. We will work with Blue Moon energy next month – but this month everything builds up to that.
In several countries and cultures all over the world, this month is celebrated as a time to commune with spirits and the dead. The Incas, celebrate their festival of the dead, the Ayamarca this month as well. Other festivals observed are also the Isia (a six day Egyptian festival that celebrated Isis' search and recovery of Osiris), The Iroquois feast of the dead, in Mexico, the Angelitus (a remembering of the souls of dead children), among many others.
During this time of the year, the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest. This means communication with spirits and all types of divination is facilitated. This month we are taking some time to get to know the Crone aspect of the Goddess. This is her time of year. I know that many people prefer to work with Maiden or Mother Goddess aspects, but the Crone is powerful and one that should not be feared. Hopefully you can get to know a Crone Goddess in the new moon and then include her in your Samhain Celebrations!
This month we will make use of the Waning moon right before the New Moon. I recommend finding a Crone Goddess that appeals to you, doing some research on her, and then performing a meditation asking for her guidance for the coming year.
Below are some Crone Goddesses you may want to get to know better:
The Black Kali Ma – Hindu Mythology
The Norse Hel – Norse Mythology
The Dark Mother Skadi – Norse Mythology
The Cailleach – Celtic Mythology
The Morrigan – Celtic Mythology
Hecate – Greek Mythology
Lillith – Herbrew Mythology
Nephthys – Egyptian Mythology
Baba Yaga – Russian Mythology
Grandmother Spiderwoman – Native American
Lara – Roman Mythology
These are just a few to get you started. Pick one that appeals to you and see how well you can connect with her.
Below are the days I have selected for our work this month!
New Moon: October 18th
Work Window: October 14th thru October 17th
I would love to see the results of your meditation – so let us know which Goddess you selected and how your meditation work went!
