Harvest Necklaces:
Recycle your decorative corn by making harvest necklaces from the kernels.
Sometimes called indian corn, these multicolored ears have the botanical name
Zea Mays. Kept dry, these necklaces should last several seasons. Children age
5 and up can easily pop the kernels off the cobs using a fork or a dime. When
you have reaped enough kernels place them in a bowl, cover them in boiling water
to kill any critters, and let them soak. They can be pierced after 4 hours but
will be more workable with longer soaking, preferably overnight.
Take the kernels out of water and dry on top of a towel. Thread the needle and
make a good knot. You can run the thread over a beeswax disk for strengthening
and preventing tangles. The kernels will still be hard on top, but the bottom
should be easy to pierce.
Try threading different patterns of color to make different styles of necklaces. If you have a skill or eye at jewelry making, you may also show your kids how to make multi strand havest necklaces.
Have fun!
