Catahoula Rescue

Catahoula Rescue was founded in 2001 by a small group of Catahoula owners. At that time, there was no other group specifically rescuing Catahoulas and Catahoula mixes from animal shelters. Often times, these wonderful dogs had little hope of getting out of the shelters alive. Catahoula Rescue began working through the Catahoula Rescue Network. In 2003 they were incorporated as a nonprofit group. They are recognized by IRS as a 501(c)3.

Catahoula Rescue, Inc is an all volunteer group whose mission is to advocate for homeless Catahoula Leopard dogs and Catahoula mixes, to place these animals in permanent, loving homes, and to promote responsible guardianship through humane education. They are proud to be the original Catahoula Rescue. They have saved and rehomed hundreds of Catahoulas and Catahoula mixes, and work diligently to save as many of these wonderful dogs as possible. They are a strong network which has the support of Catahoula owners and breeders across North America. We work with Catahoula Rescue SE, which handles dogs all over the Southeastern US. You can visit their website here: Catahoula Rescue SE Main Page

What is a Catahoula?

How can you help? There are so many ways to help! If you want to get involved - choose the way that works best for you:

  • Adopt a dog! If you have the room in your home and in your heart, adopt a Catahoula! These amazing animals have SO MUCH love and joy to give! I guarantee you they will bring warmth, happiness and wet kisses into your home! This wonderful breed is generally great with children as well. If you would like to adopt a Catahoula, please Contact Cathoula Rescue SE. You can also view a list of dogs available for adoption
  • Become a Rescue Rep: The Rescue Reps are responsible for the acceptance of a dog into the program and providing care and placement. Reps enlist the aid of Fosters to care for dogs that are brought into the program. Reps work with Special Volunteers to identify dogs in need, post available dogs in their area to the Internet, screen potential adopters, and transport dogs when necessary. Reps handle the placement, paperwork, and subsequent follow-ups on the dog. Reps maintain good working relations with area shelters and are the primary contact in their area when there is a dog in danger. If you are interested in becoming a Rescue Rep, email the Catahoula Rescue Volunteer Coordinator
  • Volunteer with the Rescue to foster a dog - Fosters are responsible for caring for dogs accepted into the Catahoula Rescue program. Fosters take the dog into their home and care for it as one of their own. Fosters take note of temperament and work with the dog to prepare for placement in a permanent, loving home. A dog may be in a foster home for as little as a week or for several months. Fosters work with Rescue Reps to give homeless Catahoulas a second chance at becoming valued members of someone's family. If you are interested in fostering, please go contact Catahoula Rescue SE for an adoption form
  • Special Volunteers: Special Volunteers are an indispensable part of any rescue organization. They give their time and special talents to assist in rescuing homeless Catahoulas. Opportunities include:
    • Transporting dogs
    • Checking local shelters and pounds for dogs in need of rescue
    • Assisting Rescue Reps with correspondence
    • Advertising available dogs
    • Web site preparation and updating
    • Updating and mailing local referral lists of available dogs
    • Checking local newspapers and yard sales for low-priced crates, doghouses, kennel runs, etc.
    • Public relations to increase awareness of animal overpopulation and the work done by Catahoula Rescue, Inc.
    • Brainstorming to create new fund raising methods, and assisting with traditional fund raising such as grant writing, event planning, and obtaining donations.
  • If you are interested in becoming a Special Volunteer, email the Catahoula Rescue Volunteer Coordinator.
